By Manjeet Singh Negi: In a step towards strengthening the newly created Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD), the tri-services unit has been moved to Bengaluru from Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
The AFSOD is now headquartered in Bengaluru, which is the centre for special forces’ training activities as it has amenities for training of parachute regiment troops, too, defence sources said here.

The tri-services unit was set up to increase jointness among the three services.
The troops of the AFSOD include the Army’s Para (Special Forces), the Navy’s Marine Commandos (MARCOS), and the Indian Air Force’s Garud. These personnel have been deployed in the Kashmir Valley for exposure to counter-terrorist operations. The AFSOD troops have been deployed in war games near the India-China border in West Bengal’s Siliguri corridor and other locations where they have carried out jumps and other activities there. The troops are also being prepared to deal with external area operations like the Op Cactus Lilly. India has been giving special equipment to these forces to enhance their abilities to carry out specialist operations across their area of operations.

600 paratroopers of the Indian Army’s airborne rapid response teams carried out large-scale airdrops near the Siliguri Corridor after being airlifted from various airbases,” an official said.
“The exercise involved advanced free-fall techniques, insertion, surveillance and target practice and seizing of key objectives by going behind enemy lines,” the official added.
