By Anupam Mishra: Police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells at the DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) workers and supporters protesting against the SSC scam, unemployment and other issues in West Bengal’s Siliguri.
Hundreds of DYFI activists gathered outside the state secretariat on Thursday, demanding employment opportunities. A huge contingent of police along with higher police officials were present at the spot.
The demonstration turned chaotic after police stopped the rally near Tinbatti More and clashes broke out between the protesters and the police. Eyewitnesses reported that the police lathi-charged and used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The demonstration was organized by the left-wing student organization DYFI, led by the prominent activist Meenakshi Mukherjee. According to sources, the police have arrested many DYFI activists, including Mukherjee.
Police have alleged that the activists threw stones at them, and hence they had to resort to lathi-charge and tear gas.
