States ramp up efforts to bring back people from violence-hit Manipur

By India Today News Desk: States have ramped up efforts to bring back people from violence-hit Manipur. The state has been burning since May 3 after a protest march by the Kuki tribes sparked clashes with the non-tribal Meitei community. The march was called to oppose the recent Manipur High Court order, which asked the state government to send a recommendation to the Centre regarding the demand to include the majority and predominantly Hindu Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (STs) list.

Nearly 60 people were killed, 231 injured and around 1,700 homes were burned down in the state, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said. The state has so far evacuated 20,000 people, while 10,000 are still stranded, he said.

MAHARASHTRA

Twenty-two students from the state, stranded in Manipur, landed in Mumbai today. These students are from various parts of the state. The parents of the students were at the airport to receive them.

WEST BENGAL

The Bengal government brought home 18 students from the state, studying at the College of Agriculture in Imphal. The students were flown to Kolkata in a flight arranged by the Bengal government, with the help of the local administration in Manipur who provided safe passage and vehicle support to the students from the university campus to the Imphal airport, the government said in a press release.

“The students were pursuing B.Sc/M.Sc/Ph.D. The state government is facilitating the transport for the students to their respective residences from Kolkata. This evacuation is separate from the one carried out by the Sikkim government, which brought back 128 students from Manipur,” the release added.

ANDHRA PRADESH

The state stepped up efforts to bring back the students from Manipur to their native places safely. Officials concerned are coordinating with the central government to this extent. So far, around 100 students from Andhra Pradesh have been identified as studying in Manipur. Steps are being taken by the government to bring them back on a special flight.

The civil aviation department said they will inform the Andhra government about the timings of the special flights for shifting students.

BIHAR

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar will bring back students of the state from Manipur, an official said today. All the students holed up in their hostels and other places in the restive northeastern state, will be brought back tomorrow and the expenses of their travel will be borne by the government, the chief minister said.

“As per the directions from the chief minister, the resident commissioner in Delhi got in touch with students from Bihar in Manipur. They will be ferried to the airport in Imphal in buses, and flown back to Patna on a special flight,” the official said.

RAJASTHAN

Rajasthan will bear the travel cost of students of the state returning home from Manipur, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Sunday. He directed officials to ensure the safe return of Rajasthani students from the northeastern state.

MADHYA PRADESH

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday spoke to his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh over the phone and discussed the well-being and safety of 32 people from the state who are currently in Manipur. Most of these are students, including some sportspeople.

“Chouhan ji talked to N Biren Singh regarding the well-being and safety of students. They are safe and secure,” an official close to the chief minister told news agency PTI.

TRIPURA

Over 200 students from Tripura, who have been studying in Manipur, have returned to their home state safely, a senior official said on Sunday.

Another 21 students are still waiting at the Imphal airport to catch an Agartala-bound flight, he said. Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed happiness over the safe return of the students.

“Happy to see the first group of people arrived from Manipur safely. Gradually, everyone stranded there will be brought back. I thank our PM Narendra Modi ji, Home Minister Amit Shah ji, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia ji and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh ji for their constant support,” Saha said in a Facebook post.
