By Indrajit Kundu: After Union minister Anurag Thakur criticised the ban on the movie The Kerala Story in West Bengal, the ruling TMC hit back, asking the minister why the Centre banned the BBC documentary on PM Modi.
“The one giving us lectures sitting in Delhi has himself said ‘Goli maro salo ko‘. I want to ask him, why did he ban the BBC documentary on PM Modi?” said the TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.
Supporting the state government’s decision to ban the movie, Ghosh said, “It is a film that aims to polarise and provoke a community. The film is based on falsehood and misinformation, as stated by our chief minister.”
“People are the ultimate judges, and we generally don’t call for bans, but if someone intentionally distorts facts to malign a section of the society, what is the administration supposed to do?” Ghosh asked.
“The 32,000 figure, which the film claims is fully exaggerated. So any responsible administration will initiate action against such falsehood and misrepresentation,” he added.

Demanding immediate withdrawal of the ban, West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should tender her resignation if she was incapable of maintaining law and order.
“As far as I know, the movie is based on the religious indoctrination in Kerala, focussing on how women are radicalised by extremist religious clerics. This film articulates how women were converted in Kerala and were sent to countries like Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria to fight the radical terror outfit – ISIS,” he said.
“This movie is against ISIS and its modus operandi. Does CM Mamata Banerjee sympathise with the ISIS? Why would law and order get disrupted in West Bengal if this movie is screened?” asked Adhikari.
Meanwhile, the Bengal BJP unit has decided to challenge the state government’s decision in the Calcutta High Court.
“The government has no right to stop me from watching a movie duly passed by the Censor Board and refused to be stopped for screening by the Hon’ble courts,” said Bengal BJP Yuva Morcha president Indranil Khan.
“Will move to the Hon’ble court to seek justice against such blatant violation of freedom of speech and expression enshrined in Article 19 of the Indian Constitution,” he said.
