By Anupam Mishra: Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of various development projects in West Bengal on Tuesday and also integrated the Petrapol police station building along with several BSF outposts along the Indo-Bangla border.
While visiting the Land Port Authority of India, Amit Shah stressed on improving connectivity infrastructure and people’s connectivity in border areas.
Amit Shah also laid down the foundation stone for Maitri Dwaar, the second cargo gate at the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI). He also inaugurated the Petrapol police station building along with several BSF outposts on the Indo-Bangla border.
The Centre has plans to boost bilateral trade by building a giant cargo gate, the second such at Petrapol Land Port.
The gate named Maitri Dwaar with an eight-lane vehicle access channel will multiply the movement of goods for import and export between India and Bangladesh.
LPAI is building the gate which comes under the home ministry. Petrapol is the largest land port in India and ninth largest in South Asia. Cargo movement will go up manifold as this Maitri Dwaar becomes functional.
Apart from this, the home minister also inaugurated seven newly constructed BSF outposts in Nadia and North 24 Pargana districts which have been built at a cost of Rs 108 crores.
In a ceremony, Amit Shah said, “We have around 15 thousand km long land border with border states and land port is the organisation undertaking the ports and Modi ji has given new energy to LPAI in 2016. 2nd cargo gate will improve the business between the two countries.
“This is a new chapter for two countries. We share a common culture language and lifestyle and Bangladesh was born due to India’s efforts. We have built a new policy after Modi Ji came to power. Before that border development connectivity trade and border development was minimal,” he further said.
“We want strong infrastructure in border areas and want good connectivity in border areas and we are working in this area also. We want to increase people’s connection also. It is important to have a good relationship with border countries. LPAI has taken a lot of initiatives in the last five years.” Amit Shah said at the ceremony.
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikary, Minister of State for Home Nishith Pramanik and Minister of Shipping Shantanu Thakur were also present at the ceremony.
Suvendu Adhikary urged the Mamata Banerjee government to hand over the land area to BSF for 72 border outposts.
“Amit Shah as home minister stopped cow smuggling. We have to support BSF also. I also congratulate Amit Shah to enhance the border area to strengthen BSF. I appeal to the West Bengal government that today we don’t want any politics on Rabindra Jayanti but, I will say one thing to the chief minister Mamata Banerjee to give land area to BSF which it has demanded for the establishment of 72 outposts along the border,” said Adhikary.
Earlier, Amit Shah visited Jorasanko Thakurbari, Kolkata and paid his tributes to Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary.
