By Abdul Basheer: The historic Kotwal office building of Hyderabad Police, which was the police commissioner till 2002, at Puranihaveli in South Zone will regain its vintage charm soon. The city police administration officially began the restoration work on Wednesday.

City Police Chief CV Anand unveiled the plaque to mark the beginning of restoration work of the heritage building, which exemplifies the 176-year-old city police history.

The building constructed over a century ago functioned as the office of the Kotwal from 1920 to 2002. Post relocating the commissioner’s office to Basheerbagh in 2002, the building was being used as a camp office and key review meetings were being held there. Bulldozed by time, this vintage structure would have vanished from the Hyderabad landscape, but the city police decided to restore this structure as its existence is intertwined with the history of the city and serves as an essential landmark.

The GreenKo company came forward to sponsor this restoration project. Without altering antiquity, Deccan Terrain Pvt, which renovates heritage buildings, will work on restoring the building with the materials such as quick lime, hydrated lime, raw gum extracts, fibers, and other materials that were widely used hundred years ago. Officials of Deccan Terrain gave a pictorial presentation to the top brass about the current condition of the building and the way forward.

“Due to its close proximity to many iconic structures, religious places, and other crowded areas, many of my predecessors preferred to camp in here while monitoring Friday prayers, large-scale events, and other processions. I had been continuing the same tradition and noticed that its condition is deteriorating. One day the roof caved in,” said CP Anand.
