By Rittick Mondal: The West Bengal government has taken cognisance of an incident in Kaliaganj where a man as forced to travel 200 km with infant son’s body in a bag as he was unable afford the ambulance fare.
On Monday, the West Bengal State secretariat summoned a report from the district Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH).
The incident took place on May 13 when Asim Devasharma, a migrant worker, was unable to afford the fee demanded by ambulance drivers, leaving him with no choice but to take his son’s body himself in a body bag.

The baby had died in the North Bengal Medical college hospital on Saturday. The grieving father had approached the hospital authorities for an ambulance to carry his deceased son’s body to his home.
This is when he was asked for Rs 8,000 as the ambulance fees to carry out the task. Unable to pay the amount, Asim Devasharma boarded a private bus from Bengal’s Siliguri to Raiganj and then took another bus to reach his hometown, Kaliaganj carrying his son’s body in a bag.
