By India Today News Desk: An experience never goes waste and it can come in handy at the most unexpected place and hour.

A female conductor, S Vasanthamma, helped a woman passenger deliver a baby on a Bengaluru-Chikkamagaluru KSRTC bus on Monday. Vasanthamma, 52, reportedly quit her job as an assistant in the labour ward in a hospital 20 years ago to become a conductor.

The 22-year-old, Fatima, who hails from Assam, was travelling from Bengaluru to Chikkamagaluru, when she developed labour pains, which Vasanthamma quickly noticed. She stepped in for assistance. Vasanthamma asked the driver to stop the bus and urged all male passengers to get down. A few minutes later, Fatima delivered a baby girl.

“I realised that delivery could happen any time. I asked the driver to stop the bus and all male passengers to get down. Within a few minutes, she delivered a baby. In the meantime, the passengers contacted the ambulance. By the time the ambulance could reach the spot, the baby was born,” said Vasanthamma, as quoted by The Hindu. Her experience at the private hospital helped her handle the situation with confidence, she said.

Later, Fatima was shifted to a community hospital. KSRTC Managing Director hailed Vasanthamma for her service and assured that the woman conductor will be felicitated in a programme soon.
