Heatwave warning in West Bengal’s southern districts, scattered thundershowers may follow

By Dipaneeta Das: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of Kolkata on Tuesday issued a heatwave warning for the southern districts of West Bengal a day after twin squalls hit the capital city.

Addressing a press meet on Tuesday, Chief Meteorological Officer of Eastern Zone Sanjeev Banerjee said, “Heatwave warning in Purulia Bankura, West Burdwan West Medinipur and Jhargram districts for Tuesday. On Wednesday, the heatwave will prevail in West Burdwan and Bankura districts.”

However, there may be some respite from the heat as scattered thundershowers are likely in all the districts of South Bengal between Thursday to Saturday. Along with the rain, there is a risk of gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph and lightning.

The chance of rain will be high in Nadia, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, and East Burdwan district.

Bringing down the temperature in the hills, thundering and light storms are predicted in North Bengal till Saturday.

“There remains a chance of more rain in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. A heavy rain warning is in place for parts of Darjeeling Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri Alipurduar on Thursday. Further, there is also prediction of scattered thundershowers in 8 districts of North Bengal with light gusts of 30 to 40 km and lightning,” the press release said.

Kolkata, meanwhile, will remain partly cloudy. There will be heat and humidity discomfort throughout the day from morning. The chances of rain will increase on Thursday.

This comes a day after twin squalls lashed the capital city of Bengal on Monday. At least 5 people were killed in the sudden and powerful gusty winds that clocked wind speeds of 60 kmph and 81 kmph. The storm brought down the temperatures by 8 degrees in Kolkata.
