Bille Jean King Cup: Ankita wins two matches, guides India to 2-1 win over Thailand

[ad_1]

Ankita Raina came up with a gritty fare, winning both her singles and doubles matches to help India beat Thailand 2-1 in the opening league match of the Asia-Oceania Billie Jean King Cup women’s tennis tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Tuesday.

Ankita put the teams on par by winning the second singles against Peangtarn Plipuech 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in a battle of wits that lasted nearly three hours.

Returning to the court with Rutuja Bhosale, Ankita sustained the good work, as the Indian pair recovered after losing the first set to record a resounding victory against the experienced Luksika Kumkhum and Plipuech.

Rutuja had earlier lost tamely to Luksika, but fighting back was the order of the day for the Indian team, thanks to the gutsy role played by Ankita.

In other matches, China and Japan, the Asian super powers, beat Uzbekistan and Korea with identical margin of 3-0.

The results (league)

India bt Thailand 2-1 (Rutuja Bhosale lost to Luksika Kumkhum 2-6, 1-6; Ankita Raina bt Peangtarn Plipuech 5-7, 6-1, 6-3; Ankita & Rutuja bt Luksika & Peangtarn 4-6, 6-3, 6-2).
