The daring murder led to tensions across the state as the government imposed Section 144 and shut down the internet to keep the situation under control.
Here is all that has happened so far.
ATIQ AHMED, ASHRAF BURIED
Atiq Ahmed’s body, along with that of his brother Ashraf, was buried in the Kasari Masari graveyard in the old city area of Prayagraj after a post-mortem. His sons performed the last rites.
This is the same graveyard where Atiq’s son, Asad, was buried on Saturday. Asad was killed in a police encounter on Thursday.

Atiq and Ashraf were hit by a total of 13 bullets, the autopsy report has revealed.
Atiq Ahmed was hit by eight bullets. Bullets were found in his head, neck, chest and waist, respectively, as per the autopsy report.
Ashraf was shot in the neck, back, wrist, stomach and waist, while three bullets were recovered from his body, and two bullets ripped through him, the autopsy report read.
SHOOTERS SENT TO JUDICIAL CUSTODY
The three assailants were sent to 14-day judicial custody by a district court on Sunday. The shooters, identified as Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lavlesh Tiwari, killed Atiq and his brother last night when they were being taken for a medical test.
The UP Police revealed that the assailants posed as journalists, carrying video cameras, mics and media identity cards. According to the FIR, the moment Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf started talking to the media, one of the shooters dropped his mic and camera and picked up his pistol, and fired at them.

The Turkish pistols are banned in India, thus raising speculations that they were smuggled or brought here illegally.
The price of these pistols is around 6 to 7 lakh rupees. It is a semi-automatic pistol produced by the Turkish firearm manufacturing company TiSAS. A semi-automatic pistol is a handgun that automatically ejects and loads cartridges in the chamber after each shot is fired.

OPPN QUESTIONS LAW AND ORDER IN UP
Several opposition parties, including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party, stepped up their attack on the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government over the daring murder. The Opposition raised questions over the law and order situation in the state.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee slammed the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging a complete “collapse of law and order in Uttar Pradesh”.
Former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati said that the murder of Atiq and Ashraf openly in police custody raises serious questions over the style of functioning of the Uttar Pradesh government.
“Judiciary has the right to decide the punishment of the criminal. This right cannot be given to any government, any leader or any person who violates the law,” Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on Twitter.
In a press statement issued by the Samajwadi Party, party chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “Uttar Pradesh is caught in the grip of ‘jungle raj’. There is no rule of law and the Constitution here. Crime has reached its peak, killings are happening openly on the streets. Criminals are fearless and have got the protection of the ruling party.”
