Sober and bored? It’s Normal Here’s What To Do About It.

If your job represents a form of security but is painstakingly boring, explore new possibilities for employment even if you never fill out an application or get a job interview. As the saying goes, “An idle mind is the devil’s playground.” Anyone with too much time on their hands may find themselves in hot water. People who tend to be bored may also be weary or restless because of a lack of personal interests. They may be bored with themselves, their jobs, and their life. Recovery is hard work, but we think you’ll find it’s well worth it.

The feeling often occurs when the day has been monotonous or repetitive. Many people turn to screen-based activities like watching TV or scrolling on their phone when they’re feeling bored. Trying to prevent boredom or override the feeling by eating and finding other distractions doesn’t always work.

I’ve seen that and I know the power of that, and I didn’t have that. I couldn’t access that because the rooms I was walking into made me feel completely messed up and scared and worked against my recovery. No one’s using it ceremonially in the United States. Boredom can indeed lead to cravings for alcohol, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Consuming alcohol stimulates the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a significant role in our brain’s reward system. Dopamine is like a pat on the back from our brain. It signals a feeling of satisfaction, pleasure, or reward, encouraging us to repeat the behavior that led to this good feeling.

For example, mothers, a frequently targeted group for marketing all products, are now encouraged to share their love for alcohol on t-shirts, mugs, and even children’s clothing. In our society, a mother describing how the stress of raising kids led to hefty wine consumption is as acceptable as tired jokes about burning dinner or useless husbands. Sometimes a quick 10–20-minute walk is all it takes to recenter yourself and forget drinking because of boredom about the urge to snack out of boredom. Eating in front of a screen while you’re bored can influence you to overeat when you aren’t even hungry. Here are a few specific ways you can tailor your environment to discourage yourself from boredom eating when the urge strikes. When your body is physically hungry and in need of calories for energy, you may notice signs like your stomach growling, a headache, and feelings of weakness or fatigue.

You can even add a splash of lemon or lime to the water to trick your mind into thinking this is a little treat. True hunger builds gradually, and any type of food you find will satisfy your appetite. There are usually no lingering feelings of shame because you’re providing your body with the energy it needs, even if the meal wasn’t so healthy. In times of stress, hardship, or loss, help your loved one find better ways to cope with negative emotions.

So, when we’re bored and our brain is looking for that dopamine hit, it can often recall that alcohol was a past source of reward. That’s why we might find ourselves reaching for a drink when we’re simply sitting and not doing much. We’ve all felt it — that nagging sensation of boredom.

You have a hard time cutting yourself off once you start drinking. Perhaps you frequently get caught up in the feeling of euphoria that comes with being intoxicated. You feel compelled to keep drinking to maintain that high.

Many drinkers at this stage are more likely to drink and drive or experience legal troubles as a result of their drinking. Frequent, uncontrolled alcohol abuse eventually leads to problem drinking. While any form of alcohol abuse is problematic, the term “problem drinker” refers to someone who starts experiencing the impacts of their habit. Drinking large amounts of alcohol at one time is dangerous, and can even lead to coma or death. Furthermore, you may become dependent on the feeling you get from drinking and find that these episodes increase in frequency. Narrowing from a societal view to an individual one, my clinical experience suggests the triggers for drinking are varied.
