By Rohit Kumar Singh: Bihar will pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the families of all those who have died from consuming poisonous liquor in the state since 2016, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced today amid the recent 26 hooch deaths in East Champaran.

The state government will give Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the family members of the victims if they submit proof that the victim was a member of the family, provide information about where the victim bought the spurious liquor from and where it was consumed, Kumar said.

All the documents will have to be given to the district magistrate concerned, following which the compensation will be disbursed.

“I am pained by the deaths which have taken place in Motihari, where people have died after consuming poisonous liquor. The government has now decided to compensate the families of those who have died in hooch incidents with retrospective effect from 2016. Rs 4 lakh in compensation will be given to the families,” Kumar said.

The BJP, in opposition now in the state, called this a victory of its continuing pressure on the government to provide compensation to the families who lost their loved ones in the hooch incidents.

“It is our victory. We have been pressurizing the government continuously to provide compensation to the families of those who lost their lives after consuming poisonous liquor. It is because of our pressure that the government has now relented and decided to provide compensation,” BJP MLA and former minister Neeraj Bablu said.
