EXCLUSIVE: Miss India Nandini Gupta on entering films, “Well, why not?”

As Nandini is busy living her moment of glory, Bollywood Hungama caught up with her exclusively on her journey enroute Miss India and her plans for the future.

The most obvious question. What went through you when you were announced as the next Miss India?

Oh, I still think of that moment, and I get chills. My heart skipped a beat. All my hard work and perseverance paid off. (It is the) most precious moment of my life and I’ll relive every bit of it every day.

What does winning Miss India mean to you?

Miss India is a milestone that I always wanted to achieve in my life. And winning this is so surreal for me. This title means the world to me, a step ahead, closer to my dreams. And I hope I continue to receive the love and support from the people.

What is your parents’ reaction? How has your family supported you in your journey?

I never saw my dad crying. Seeing tears in his eyes truly made me believe that I have made him proud. My parents were supportive throughout the journey, making sure I give my best in all aspects of my life.

How challenging is it to follow discipline, including fitness and diet?

I believe it’s more of how beautifully you make it your regime. Discipline, fitness and diet are something that truly makes you feel better. A better person every day. Fitness and diet are more of eat in proportion and proper exercise in order to burn that out.

Now that you have bagged the title of Miss India, whatever you say or stand for will have far more weight and impact. So, what are the social issues you feel deserve immediate attention?

Mental health is the most prominent issue that I feel deserves immediate attention. Because the more people become aware of the issue, it will get acknowledged. Everyone in their lives face too much of anxiety, depression and lack of self-worth. It’s very important to make them feel that they are worth it and not alone.

How are you managing your studies in between beauty pageant activities and modelling?

Being a management student, I handled it very well. Even living in a city like Mumbai where I lived alone, I accepted all the challenges with grace. Of course, it was hard, but it was worth it.

Like you, Suman Rao, who won the Miss India 2019, is also from Rajasthan. Have you ever interacted with her?

Yes, I have, and she is a beautiful person in and out. I have always seen her as my inspiration. I have so much to learn from her. Her grace, poise and intellect are breath-taking.

Priyanka Chopra has been your role model on this route. What do you like the most about her?

I like how she has a perfect balance of not only her professional and personal life, but also how beautifully she speaks, her sense of humour, simplicity, zest and zeal to grow every day is what I like the most about her.

You said that your inspiration is Ratan Tata. Apart from his business acumen, what other qualities of his have appealed to you the most?

He is a down-to-earth human being and has been a big-time philanthropist. His personality and genuineness and his love and affection towards India and its people is commendable.

Generally, the natural progression for Miss India or beauty pageant winners is Bollywood. Are you looking forward to making a career in films? If yes, what are the type of roles you would like to play?

Well, why not? I won’t let any opportunity go where I am getting to learn. I haven’t decided the types of roles because I know only bits of this industry and choosing without having proper knowledge is unfair. I want to explore all the opportunities future has in for me.
