By Saraswat Kashyap: Former Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta on Wednesday filed a complaint against Indian Youth Congress chief Srinivas BV in Assam’s Dispur police station accusing him of being “sexist and chauvinistic” and using derogatory comments.
As per the complaint, BV Srinivas has not only been harassing and torturing Angkita for the last six months but also threatened her of dire consequences if she approached the higher office-bearers of the Congress to complain about him.
According to the letter, Angkita had gone to Raipur in Chhattisgarh on March 25 to attend the Congress’s plenary session where BV Srinivas heckled her and threatened to ruin her career if she approached the top brass of the party to complain about him.
Angkita alleged that BV Srinivas warned her that if she did not pay heed to his direction, he would ensure she could not go outside Assam to attend any party meeting. The former Assam Youth Congress alleged that she had been receiving threats before and even after the Raipur incident.
Angkita said that she found the words that the Congress youth wing president used for her ‘derogatory, sexist, chauvinistic, demeaning and outrageous to the modesty’ of a woman. She alleged that she had reported the matter to the higher authorities in the Congress but no action was taken against Srinivas.
In a series of tweets that she posted on Twitter a couple of days ago, Angkita explained how she had approached Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kashmir to report about Srinivas’s harassment but no action was taken.
Although Angkita registered the complaint on Wednesday, the police are yet to register an FIR in the case. She clarified that she is not complaining about the party but an individual and that she is waiting for the Congress to take a stand on the matter.
Soon after Angkita came out with a series of tweets explaining the harassment she had been facing from BV Srinivas, the legal cell of the Indian Youth Congress said it would initiate strict action against Dutta for levelling ‘frivolous allegations’ against the IYC president.
A day later, Angkita alleged that she was removed from the post of the Assam Youth Congress President and blamed an in-charge, Vardhan Yadav, for acting at the behest of BV Srinivas. Srinivas too sent a legal notice to Angkita saying she was defaming him.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has asked the Assam Police to conduct an inquiry into the harassment allegations levelled by Angkita and asked the Director General of Police, Assam, to submit a detailed report of the case.
