By Munish Chandra Pandey: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has called former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik for questioning in connection with his claim that he was offered a Rs 300-crore bribe to clear two files during his stint in J&K, sources said.
“The CBI has asked me to appear before them as they want to clarify certain things about the case. They have verbally asked me to come on 27th or 28th April as per my comfort,” said Satya Pal Malik while speaking to India Today.
Satya Pal Malik had claimed that he was offered a Rs 300-crore bribe for clearing files during his tenure as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir between August 23, 2018 and October 30, 2019.
Recently, Malik had alleged that he was offered money by RSS and BJP leader Ram Madhav to pass the scheme. Ram Madhav termed the allegations baseless and has filed a defamation case against Satya Pal Malik.
Last year, in October, the CBI had questioned Satypal Malik in connection with this case.
In April last year, the CBI registered the two FIRs in connection with corruption allegations levelled by Satya Pal Malik in the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees and civil work worth Rs 2,200 crore related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in the erstwhile state.
WHO IS SATYA PAL MALIK?
Satya Pal Malik, a career politician, was appointed as Governor of Bihar in 2017. He was sent to Jammu and Kashmir in 2018, where he oversaw the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019. He was the first career politician to be appointed as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 51 years after Karan Singh, whose term had ended in 1967.

Satya Pal Malik started his political career as a student leader in Meerut University and became MLA in 1974. He joined the Congress in 1984 and became a Rajya Sabha MP, but resigned three years later amid the Bofors scam. He switched to the V P Singh-led Janta Dal in 1988 and became an MP from Aligarh on its ticket in 1989.
In 2004, Satya Pal Malik joined the BJP and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections, losing to former prime minister Charan Singh’s son Ajit Singh.
Before taking the oath as Bihar governor on October 4, 2017, he was in-charge of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha. He was the Union minister of state, parliamentary affairs and tourism from April 21, 1990 to November 10, 1990.
