A protest against the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl turned violent in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Friday after the locals blocked roads and indulged in vandalism, forcing the police to resort to lathi-charge and firing tear gas shells at them.
On Thursday, the locals found the body of the minor, who had gone missing. According to reports, she belonged to the Rajbongshi community. One person has been arrested by the police in connection with the girl’s death.
The locals alleged that the girl was raped and killed and staged a protest demanding justice for her. During the protests, they blocked the roads and damaged chairs and tables in nearby shops. Subsequently, police arrived at the spot upon receiving information about the vandalism by locals and lathi-charged at them. Police also fired tear gas shells to control the situation. A few locals have been arrested as well.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari criticised the law and order situation in the state and accused the state government of not taking action as “perpetrators were becoming emboldened”.
