HOW AMRITPAL SINGH KEPT DODGING POLICE?
Amritpal Singh had been changing his locations ever since the crackdown against him began.
The Punjab Police made several attempts to catch the fugitive but the effort ended in vain as Amritpal kept escaping the clutches of cops.
Amritpal – after the crackdown – was first spotted with his aides in a Mercedes car. Later, he and his supporters were moving in four vehicles. Amritpal’s convoy was asked to stop at a police checkpoint, but he escaped by breaking through it.
Shortly after he escaped in the Mercedes car, he switched vehicles and boarded a Brezza. He was later seen on a bike and after 10 to 12 kilometers, Amritpal escaped on a different bike.
Amritpal entered Ludhiana from Jalandhar on the night of March 18. He had left four of his aides in Jalandhar. He stayed for around an hour at the Sheikhupura Gurdwara there. The Gurdwara’s Granthi gave Amritpal a bike and a Scooty. Around 9.30 pm, Amritpal escaped on the Scooty. The Granthi’s son was driving the vehicle. Amritpal’s aide Pappalpreet rode the bike. The two vehicles left on different routes.
After this, a photo emerged showing Amritpal Singh carrying his getaway bike on a cart. He was wearing a pink turban and dark glasses while holding the bike.
On March 20, Amritpal reached Kurukshetra, where he was seen boarding a Haryana Roadways bus. In Haryana, Amritpal Singh and Papalpreet Singh took shelter at a woman’s house. The woman, identified as Baljit Kaur, was arrested by the Haryana Police.
Afterwards, CCTV footage showed Amritpal Singh in Delhi’s Madhu Vihar on March 21 donning a new look. This time, Amritpal had removed his turban and cut his hair short.
On March 23, Amritpal Singh was seen in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri.
From there, he arrived in Jalandhar again. Sources said he was going there to give an interview to an international channel and surrender but the police started tailing their vehicle.
He then escaped from the police in Hoshiarpur where a door-to-door search was launched to nab the Khalistani preacher.
Before his surrender, probe by police revealed that Amritpal Singh had taken refuge in the gurdwaras affiliated to Gurudwara Langar Sahib ,Nanded Sahib (Huzur Sahib) including Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh), Saproad (Phagwara), Sahnewal (Ludhiana) and Nadalon (Hoshiarpur).
Amritpal Singh and his aide Papalpreet Singh escaped the Punjab Police in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district on March 28. However, later Papalpreet was arrested in the same Hoshiarpur.
According to Punjab Police, Amritpal had earlier taken refuge at a Mohanpur Gurudwara in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit. He had also used the vehicles owned by the head of this gurdwara, Mohan Singh, to reach Punjab.
The Mahindra Scorpio vehicle in which Amritpal and Papalpreet Singh travelled to Phagwara was driven by Joga Singh who was arrested from Sahnewal, Ludhiana.
Amritpal Singh was on the run since the Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt against him and his associates.
A convoy of over 50 cars gave chase to Amritpal Singh before his slipped the fingers of the Punjab Police.
He and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.
Incidentally, Amritpal surrendered three days after his wife Kirandeep Kaur was held for questioning at the Amritsar airport while she was trying to flee to London. Kirandeep Kaur, who was questioned by the customs department, was detained as a precautionary measure under the same legal process under which the family and acquaintances of the absconding accused are questioned.
