By India Today News Desk: “I felt proud that he surrendered like a warrior,” said Amritpal Singh’s mother, Balwinder Kaur, in her first reaction to the arrest of her son.
“We saw the news and came to know that he has surrendered. I felt proud that he surrendered like a warrior; We will fight a legal battle, and we will also go and meet him at the earliest,” she said.
Amritpal’s father, speaking on the arrest, requested Singh Sangat to carry on with the “mission” of his son.
“I request Singh Sangat that the mission of my son must be carried forward. My son is fighting a battle to curb the drug menace. We got the information from TV news and he was not in contact with his family,” said Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh.
“The pictures that have surfaced in the media are not clear. He still dons Sikh attire today. I am with everyone who were harassed by the Punjab Police,” he said.
Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh, who was on the run since March 18, surrendered before Moga Police in Punjab. He will be shifted to Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, where eight of his aides, including Papalpreet Singh, are already being held under the National Security Act.
Meanwhile, an aircraft carrying Amritpal Singh has landed in Dibrugarh. New CCTV will be installed in Dibrugarh jail, sources said. There are already 57 CCTVs and a new CCTV will be installed in Amritpal’s cell.
Booked under the NSA, Amritpal Singh could be detained for at least twelve months unless an extension is sought on the basis of new evidence. The NSA empowers the police to keep him in custody for ten days without substantiating charges against him.
The Khalistani ideologue is also facing a slew of other charges — he and his associates were booked for spreading disharmony, attempt to murder, attacking police personnel and obstructing public servants’ lawful discharge of duty after storming the Ajnala police station on February 23.
