Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh was taken to the central jail in Assam’s Dibrugarh following his arrest today. Eight of his aides are already being held in the high-security jail under the National Security Act, which allows detention for up to a year without any charge.
Amritpal Singh addressed a gathering at a Gurdwara in Rode village of Moga district before surrendering. Amritpal had been on the run since March 18, when Punjab Police launched a major crackdown on members of his ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit.
Addressing a presser, Punjab IGP said Amritpal Singh ran out of options, and he had to surrender. Amritpal Singh had an NSA warrant issued against him, the cop said. Amritpal Singh was hiding in Rode, the native village of Khalistani separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed in Operation Blue Star.
The Punjab Police has already invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against Amritpal Singh.
