‘Incompetent govt’: Child rights body slams TMC over minor girl’s death in Kaliganj

[ad_1]

By Rajesh Saha: On Sunday, a team of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) led by chairperson Priyank Kanoongo visited the residence of a minor tribal girl, who was allegedly raped and killed in West Bengal’s Kaliaganj area in North Dinajpur.

According to Priyank Kanoongo, as the police have not yet recorded the statement of the victim’s family, the police shouldn’t draw conclusions until the family’s statement is recorded.

Priyank Kanoongo further claimed, “The minor girl’s family told us that the investigation officer (IO) has not recorded the statement of any family member yet.”

On being asked about the West Bengal state commission’s allegations against the NCPCR over the protection of child rights, Priyank Kanoongo slammed the state commission by calling them “incompetent.”

“I don’t want to make any comments on an incompetent body, working on behalf of an incompetent government, to protect the image of a chief minister.”

There has been a series of controversies over this statement made by the chairperson of NCPR.

State Commission on NCPR’s visit

When the NCPR visited the place of the incident, the state commission posted several tweets on the same day, slamming the national commission.

Multiple tweets were posted raising questions over how the members of NCPR team could go to Kaliaganj while section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was imposed in the area.

The state commission has also charged Priyank Kanoongo for making provocative comments.

NCPR chairperson’s visit to victim’s residence

The chairperson of the child rights body stayed for almost two hours with the victim’s family. Priyank Kanoongo said, “We have recorded the statements of victim’s parents, friends and relatives.”

We informed the district administration two days ago about our scheduled meeting with the IO and the doctor who performed the autopsy of the minor girl on Sunday. We waited for a long time, but no one showed up, added the NCPR chairperson.
