By Anupam Mishra: A day after a group of protesters vandalised Kaliaganj police station and set it on fire over the death of a minor girl, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari accused the police of killing a tribal youth in Kaliaganj.
In a tweet, Adhikari alleged that Bengal cops raided the house of a BJP Panchayet Samiti member Bishnu Barman at 2.30 am on April 27. He added that the police shot dead 33-year-old Mrityunjay Barman after the raid.
The police have not yet given an official response on this matter. However, police sources said that, local people surrounded the cops and started beating up a policeman during a police raid last night.
To save themselves, a police officer fired into the air and they managed to escape. According to police sources, it has not been confirmed whether the youth died due to police gunfire or not. An inquiry has been initiated into the matter.
The BJP alleged that police started the operation after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statement yesterday in connection to the death of a teen who was found dead near a canal in Bengal’s Kaliganj last week.
The chief minister on Wednesday promised that the case would be probed and so would be the violence and arson that happened on Tuesday. “We will stand by the victim’s family. But the way hooliganism happened yesterday and the way the police were attacked and property was damaged, I will ask the police to investigate these incidents as well and take action,” she said.
Violence erupted in West Bengal’s Kaliaganj on Saturday after a minor tribal girl was allegedly raped and murdered. Videos showed police personnel dragging the victim’s body through the street.
The crime took place on Friday in Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district and the body of the victim was later found by locals.
Amid the violence that has rocked Kaliaganj in Uttar Dinajpur district over the death of the minor girl, protesters not only vandalised property and set fire to Kaliaganj police station but also gheraoed and attacked police personnel, as videos that have emerged on social media show. In a video, an angry mob can be seen thrashing Bengal police personnel.
