Three-and-a-half years after his near-death experience, Abhilash Tomy, now retired from the Indian Navy, is on the verge of completing what he missed out on back then. As of April 26 evening, the Indian sailor is 290 nautical miles — around 540 kms — away from completing a non-stop circumnavigation of the globe without using modern aids.
Of the 16 sailors who started the race in September last year, three remain in the fray. Ten have already given up, while the remaining have been relegated to the ‘Chichester Class’, which is for participants who were forced to make a stop or open the GPS equipment’s seal once during their race.
Abhilash Tomy is at number two. According to predictions made by the race organisers, Tomy is likely to cross the finish line on the morning of April 29, a day behind current race leader Kirsten Neuschafer of South Africa.
