In September 2018, Commander Abhilash Tomy lay half dead in the middle of the southern Indian Ocean. His boat broken and spine shattered, Commander Abhilash Tomy was far away from humanity. The nearest continent was the desolate Antarctica.
For three days, Commander Tomy’s sailboat Thuriya bobbed in the ocean as naval aircraft — part of an international mission to rescue him — flew overhead. He was finally picked up by a patrol boat and transported to a nearby island. There, after urgent first aid was administered to him, he was transferred to an Indian Navy warship for his eventual return home.
The events described above are from Commander Abhilash Tomy’s daring attempt to sail around the world non-stop as part of the 2018-19 Golden Globe Race.
