Violence erupts during Hanuman Jayanti rally in Odisha’s Sambalpur, 10 cops injured

By India Today News Desk: At least 10 police personnel, including one woman cop, were injured on Wednesday after violence erupted during a motorbike rally in Odisha’s Sambalpur ahead of Hanuman Jayanti. Following the violence, Section 144 was imposed in all six police station areas of the Sambalpur district.

The violence erupted when stones were thrown at the motorbike rally that was held two days before Hanuman Jayanti. In Odisha, the festival is celebrated on Maha Vishuva Sankranti, which falls on April 14 this year.

Videos on social media showed people hurling stones at the rally. India Today could not independently verify the authenticity of these videos.

One makeshift shop and several two-wheelers were set on fire while a number of cars were damaged during the violence, which began after stones were thrown at the motorbike rally participated by around 1000 people.

Additional SP Tapan K Mohanty told reporters that an adequate force deployment has been made at sensitive places in the city.

When asked if anyone else outside the police force was also injured in the incident, Mohanty said an investigation is going on and nothing more can be revealed at the moment.

Sub-divisional Magistrate and sub-collector, Sadar Sambalpur, Pravas Chandra Dandasebna, issued a notification saying gathering of more than two people is not allowed.

The injured police personnel, which included an additional superintendent of police and two inspectors, were taken to a hospital.
