Congress urges Amitabh Bacchan to support wrestlers’ protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh

By India Today News Desk: Amid heavy protests by prominent wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh over sexual assault allegations, including that of a minor wrestler, Congress has sought support from actor Amitabh Bachchan. Congress leader Salman Anees Soz took to social media to draw support from the 80-year-old actor and “other superstars”.

“Dear Amitabh Bachchan, You must be aware of India’s female wrestling champions seeking justice. They deserve support from India’s most influential voices. Your T 4633 could help elevate their voices. They deserve support from you and other superstars. Please raise your voice,” the Congress leader tweeted.

While the second phase of the wrestlers’ protest against WFI chief Singh entered its 7th day on Saturday, critics noted the absence of support and voices from sports personalities and athletes. On Saturday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed solidarity with the wrestlers at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal came out in their support too.

Other celebrities who have raised their voices include Swara Bhaskar, Sonu Sood, Urmila Mantondkar and Pooja Bhatt.

The wrestlers, during the demonstration, lashed out at Indian Olympics Association head PT Usha for overlooking grave allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh despite being a “woman”. On the other hand, Usha said the protests showed a lack of discipline among the wrestlers and even criticised the move.

Singh has been levelled with allegations of sexually exploiting female wrestlers for many years, a charge that the sports administrator and BJP MP has categorically denied. Refuting all claims, he has said that these protests were politically motivated and the accusations were false.
