ello and welcome to Sportstar’s Live coverage of the 16th IPL 2023 Match between Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians. Stay tuned as we get you all the latest updates.
Rohit Sharma, Player of the Match
“Winning the game is the most important. We have been working hard since the first game. We had a camp in Mumbai, and getting the result in our favour feels good. First win is always special. We played a Test match here, the pitch looked different. Getting a slow bowler was important on this pitch. The spinners kept us in the game. We needed to bat well to chase the total. I thought everyone put their hand up. We had to make it count for the team. I needed to make use of the powerplay, I knew we had to keep attacking and take my chances. I tried to create a partnership, had a good communication with Tilak. It was important for us to have a good partnership. We have young guys who haven’t played IPL before, so it’s important to have faith in them. Give them that confidence, and we are trying to have a healthy atmosphere in the dressing room. Don’t need to make drastic changes, that’s really important for us.”
David Warner after the loss
“You look at the last three IPL games we have witnessed, they have been amazing. Wrong end of it today, but the guys were fantastic. Rohit played a fantastic knock at the top of the order. Nortje is world-class and that’s what we expect from him, Mustafiz too. Timmy David was on the wrong side of it, so I tried to keep it at stump-height. I think from the last three games, we’ve some positives but we shouldn’t lost wickets in clumps. Axar should bat in the top four the way he is striking the ball. From the last three games we have played, there are a lot of positives.”
MI 173/4 in 20 Overs
What a thrilling finish to the game as Mumbai needed two runs in 1 ball and David ran his life for the two runs, putting in a valiant dive as Mumbai clinches a thriller to beat Delhi by six wickets.
MI 168/4 in 19 Overs
Cameron Green hammers Mustafizur for a maximum as the ball sails over the deep mid-wicket for a maximum and that was a massive hit. David connects the last ball for another maximum as Mumbai needs just five runs from six balls. The tension and the last-over finishes continue to enthral cricket fans! Phew!
MI 153/4 in 18 Overs
Anrich Nortje bowls a brilliant over and most importantly didn’t concede a boundary as Cameron Green and Tim David had to settle in singles as Mumbai needs 20 from 12 balls.
MI 147/4 in 17 Overs
Mustafizur Rahman has dismissed Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Porel has plucked an excellent catch behind the stumps to pack off Rohit Sharma. The Mumbai skipper went for a review but it was clean and Porel has taken a brilliant catch. Rohit falls for a brilliant 45-ball 65 and this can be the turning point of the game. Cameron Green arrived and was off the mark with a boundary to ease the pressure.
MI 139/3 in 16 Overs
Tilak started off with a boundary as he dispatched Mukesh over the backward point region and then majestically smoked the fast bowler over the deep mid-wicket for a maximum. The youngster then skipped down the track to dispatch the bowler over the extra cover region to tilt the match in Mumbai’s favour. Mukesh had his man as he dismissed Tilak, who found the fielder at the deep mid-wicket while trying to flick the fast bowler. Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form continues as Mukesh picked two wickets in towo balls to bring Delhi back in the game.
MI 123/1 in 15 Overs
Mumbai is under some pressure as the asking rate is just nearing around 10 rpo with Mustafizur giving just a couple of runs from his second over. Mumbai needs 50 runs in 30 balls. Game on!
MI 121/1 in 14 Overs
The fifty-run partnership between Lalit and Rohit is up and Mumbai is cruising at the moment needing 52 runs in 36 balls with the skipper having moved to 60 off 38 balls and Rohit will look to finish the match.
MI 117/1 in 13 Overs
Axar Patel finished his quota of four overs and although the all-rounder didn’t pick a wicket he finished with an economical spell of 4-0-20-0.
MI 112/1 in 12 Overs
Rohit Sharma hits a timely half-century, a fifty after 24 innings and this has been a good knock. Wonderful shots all around the wicket, dealing with pace and spin with precision. Tilak meanwhile, deposited Kuldeep for a maximum and Rohit ended the over with a boundary through the square.
MI 98/1 in 11 Overs
Delhi reviewed an lbw appeal but the ball was pitching outside the off-stump and Rohit survives as the ball runs away to the boundary for 4-leg byes. Mumbai making light work of the run chase.
Rohit leads from the front
MI 91/1 in 10 Overs
Right then Kuldeep into the attack and Tilak Varma picked the bones out of a back-of-length delivery and deposited the wrist spinner for a maximum as the ball just lands on the cushion. Kuldeep adjusts his length and comes back nicely to give nine from his opening over.
MI 82/1 in 9 Overs
Delhi has pulled back things as they have slowed down Mumbai’s progress as the required rate and the current rate are almost equal at 8 rpo. Tilak is living dangerously in the middle as he almost offered a catch to the fielder at fine leg. But, there is no stopping Rohit as he nears his half-century with a brilliant six and it’s bread and butter for Rohit if a bowler drops short!
MI 73/1 in 8 Overs
Delhi has broken the opening stand as Ishan Kishan falls short of his crease after a miscommunication with Rohit Sharma. Rohit charged for the single and Ishan was late in response as Lalit Yadav broke the stumps. Tilak Varma joins Rohit.
MI 70/0 in 7 Overs
Delhi Capitals running through the overs quickly by employing spin but the Mumbai openers are up for the task and are motoring nicely, needing just 103 runs from 78 balls. Another Axar Patel over negotiated nicely.
MI 68/0 in 6 Overs
End of the PowerPlay and Mumbai well on top of the run chase with Rohit and Ishan off the blocks in a flash. Rohit is looking in sublime touch as he ended the PowerPlay with a brilliant six and punished Lalit Yadav for dropping it short and Mumbai is well above the required run-rate. This is some hammering from the Mumbai openers.
MI 59/0 in 5 Overs
Axar Patel into the attack and on a track that has supported the spinners, Rohit and Ishan has done well to get Mumbai off to a brilliant start. Ishan attacked the spinner going through the mid-wicket and then Rohit ended the over with a reverse sweep for a boundary. Top batting from the Mumbai openers.
MI 49/0 in 4 Overs
Spin into the attack and it’s Lalit Yadav who has been brought in as Delhi searches for an early breakthrough. Both Rohit and Ishan see through the over and haven’t taken any unwanted risk. The extra ball after Lalit conceded a wide, turned viciously as Ishan got an outside edge and the ball ran away to the fence. Mumbai won’t mind.
MI 42/0 in 3 Overs
Anrich Nortje has been taken to the cleaners by Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai skipper oozed class with a brilliant shot over the deep mid-wicket for a boundary and then slashed hard at a length delivery to the third man boundary and Mumbai is off to a brilliant start.
MI 27/0 in 2 Overs
Ishan Kishan joins the party as the southpaw hammers three consecutive boundaries and it’s a harsh welcome to Mustafizur. The good length deliveries are being dispatched to the boundaries with an audacious hit over the mid-off being the pick of the shot. Mumbai off to a brilliant start.
MI 14/0 in 1 Over
Rohit Sharma is off the blocks in a flash as the Mumbai skipper pockets two boundaries – one through the mid-wicket and then a drive through the mid-off to give Mumbai a good start. Impact player Mukesh Kumar starts in expensive fashion giving 14 in his first over.
Mumbai begins chase
Mukesh Kumar is the Impact substitute in place of Prithvi Shaw with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan starting the run chase for Mumbai.
DC 172 all out in 19.4 Overs
Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla picked three-wicket hauls as Mumbai Indians bowled out Delhi Capitals for 172 in 19.4 overs as the Delhi batting unit failed to fire in unison. David Warner registered a half-century and thanks to Axar Patel’s quickfire 54 off 25 balls that helped Delhi post a competitive target on board. Mumbai, however, will fancy to chase down the target.
DC 166/9 in 19 Overs
Behrendorff pulls things back for Mumbai Indians by dismissing Axar and Warner as both batsmen perished while trying to up the ante. Axar departed for a brilliant 25-ball 54 and Warner’s 47-ball 51 comes to an end. A direct hit and Kuldeep Yadav walks back for a duck. Mumbai pulling things after Axar’s blitz. Abhishek Porel then skied one as Behrendorff picked his third wicket. This is some collapse from Delhi!
DC 165/5 in 18 Overs
A brilliant half-century from Axar Patel and he has singlehandedly helped Delhi cross the 150-run mark en route to his maiden IPL half-century. To batting from the all-rounder and he hasn’t put a foot wrong ever since his arrival. Holds the key for a strong finish.
DC 151/5 in 17 Overs
Jason Behrendorff is back into the attack and has been taken to the cleaners with Axar Patel smashing the fast bowler for two sixes, with one injuring Suryakumar Yadav as the fielder misjudged a regulation catch and the ball breezed past his fingers and hit him flush on the left eyebrow. Thankfully Surya is fine and the partnership between Warner and Axar is worth 52 off 26 balls.
DC 136/5 in 16 Overs
David Warner hits a brilliant half-century in 43 balls and the Delhi skipper has been the lone top-order batsman to negotiate with the spin and pace of Mumbai. Top knock from the skipper and the Australian has held the innings together and will look to carry his bat through.
DC 123/5 in 15 Overs
Axar Patel provides the much-needed impetus by smashing two consecutive sixes – one over the extra cover region and the other one, Surya just misjudged as he ran in initially, approached the ball and then realised that he had to paddle back but it was too late. Much needed from Delhi’s point of view.
DC 110/5 in 14 Overs
Rohit employs more spin as Tilak Verma rolls his arms over and starts in a decent fashion giving just seven runs. Axar Patel joins Warner with the skipper approaching a half-century.
DC 103/5 in 13 Overs
Piyush Chawla makes up for the drop catch as he castles Lalit Yadav to put Mumbai Indians on top with a brilliant googly to pick his third wicket. Lalit went for an expansive drive and missed it completely as the ball knocked down the leg stump. Delhi in trouble with Warner playing a lone hand. Chawla finished with 4-0-22-3 and Rohit Sharma will be very pleased with the leg-spinner’s effort.
DC 95/4 in 12 Overs
Piyush Chawla not only dropped David Warner on 37 but also missed a run-out opportunity as Delhi is being caged and has got no momentum. Warner has been scratchy and Lalit Yadav is yet to fire.
DC 88/4 in 11 Overs
Piyush Chawla picks his second wicket as the wrist spinner traps Rovman Powell and although the batsman went for a review, the on-field decision was upheld after replays showed the ball was hitting leg stump. Mumbai in complete control of the match as Lalit Yadav joins skipper Warner. Just three runs and a wicket and this is brilliant bowling from Chawla.
DC 85/3 in 10 Overs
Riley Meredith back into the attack and Yash Dhull fails to light fireworks on his debut game. Meredith picks an important wicket at a very key moment in the game as Delhi loses its third wicket and it’s the debutant who has to depart. The short ball did the trick as Dhull flicked Meredith only to find a fielder at the deep as Wadhera took an excellent catch. Rovman Powell joins Warner and is off the mark with a boundary.
DC 78/2 in 9 Overs
Piyush Chawla breaks the stand and the leg spinner brings in all his experience to remove Manish Pandey as the batsman falls after getting off to a good start. Pandey skipped down the track and took on the leg spinner, hoping to clear the fielder at long-off but Behrendorff took a good catch.
DC 75/1 in 8 Overs
A puff of dust explodes from the pitch and there is ample evidence that there is turn and bounce in the pitch as a delivery from Shokeen beat everyone including the keeper. Warner showcased his skills by batting right-handed in a free-hit delivery, and then Pandey pocketed a boundary as Shokeen concedes 16 runs in his third over.
DC 59/1 in 7 Overs
Piyush Chawla is into the attack and the spinner starts well giving eight runs in his opening over and Warner has largely struggled to time the ball but Pandey has been striking well.
DC 51/1 in 6 Overs
Shokeen gets the ball to turn on a dry surface and the off-spinner is brave to toss the ball up to Warner. Pandey has come out with a very positive intent as he skips down the track and smacks the skipper through the mid-on and then completes the PowerPlay with another boundary, this time going over the mid-wicket region. The fifty is up for Delhi.
DC 42/1 in 5 Overs
Riley Meredith into the attack and Manish Pandey with an aggressive intent picks two boundaries first by skipping down the track and dispatching the bowler to the long-on boundary and then gets an under-edge as the ball beats the keeper and runs away to the boundary.
DC 34/1 in 4 Overs
Excellent move from Rohit Sharma as he brings in spin early and Hrithik Shokeen strikes early to remove Prithvi Shaw. The batsman employs the sweep shot but hits it straight to the fielder at backward square leg and Mumbai strikes inside the PowerPlay. Manish Pandey joins Warner. Early blow for Delhi and Shaw misses another opportunity to give his team a good start.
DC 29/0 in 3 Overs
Cameron Green comes into the attack early but there is no stopping Warner as the Delhi skipper pockets two consecutive boundaries – one through the mid-wicket and then rides on the bounce to dispatch Green to the wide of third man boundary.
DC 19/0 in 2 Overs
Warner welcomes Arshad Khan into the attack with a fierce pull through the mid-wicket for a boundary and Prithvi Shaw is timing the ball well as he ends the over with a solid punch through the covers as the ball beats the fielder and wins the race.
DC 7/0 in 1 Over
Prithvi Shaw begins in his own style by driving Behrendorff down the ground for an excellent boundary with Warner off the mark in a single. Mumbai will be aiming for early wickets while Delhi’s openers will look to cash in the PowerPlay.
Match time!
The umpires make their way into the middle and so as the Mumbai Indians, who will be keen to win the match. David Warner and Prithvi Shaw will open the innings for Delhi and for Mumbai it will be Jason Behrendorff who will start proceedings with the new ball.

“We would have done the same thing. For me it is about finding rhythm and as a whole group we gotta work harder and get sharper. We got a forced change, Khaleel Ahmed is injured and we got Yash Dhull in place of him. Also Rilee Rossouw makes way for Mustafizur Rahman. All the boys are up and about, we gotta adapt to the situations and pumped to be playing in front of the home ground.”
Rohit at the Toss
“We will bowl first. We batted in the first 2 games, didn’t do well enough. The pitch looks dry and probably take some turn and dew might also be a factor tonight. We got Riley Meredith in place of Stubbs. The other changes is about the impact players. We will see how it goes. When the chips are down you need the senior players to stand up.
