West Bengal: CID takes over probe into killing of tribal youth in Kaliaganj

By Rajesh Saha: West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took over a probe into the death of a youth in Kaliaganj.

The police were probing the matter before it was handed over to the CID on Monday morning. However, the deceased’s family is demanding a CBI probe into the case.

The family of Mrityunjay Barman had alleged that he was killed after being hit by a bullet shot by police.

The elder brother of the deceased had lodged a police complaint against an assistant sub-inspector at the Kaliaganj police station.

The entire episode ensued after massive violence that had erupted at Kaliaganj in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal after a body of a minor girl was found.

Several police personnel were thrashed, and a room of the Kaliaganj police station was set afire by the agitated locals. Following the violence, police launched an operation to nab the attackers.

It is alleged that Mrityunjay Barman died during the police operation in the border area of Kaliaganj last Wednesday. Tension prevailed in Kaliaganj over the death of Mritunjan Barman. Since then, continuous protests have been going on.

Reacting to Barman’s death, the BJP claimed that he was an active party member. Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari accused the police of killing a tribal youth in Kaliaganj.

Amid the ongoing investigation, advocate Anindya Sundar Das, on Monday, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the Calcutta High Court.
