By Pramod Madhav: Two workers died of suffocation while cleaning a septic tank at a private school in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur on International Workers’ Day on Monday.
The workers have been identified as Govindan (45) and Subburayalu (45), both involved in sanitation work. While Govindan was an employee of the Meenjur panchayat, Subburayalu was hired on a contract basis.
When the two men entered the septic tank to clean it, they inhaled poisonous gas and died on the spot. Their bodies were retrieved by the Fire and Rescue service, who had to use a rope harness and safety equipment to pull them up.
The bodies were then sent to the Ponneri Government Hospital for autopsy. Meanwhile, the Meenjur Police has registered a case and detained Simiyon Victor, the principal of the school, for questioning.
Simiyon said that two men were sent by Meenjur panchayat officials for cleaning work. But panchayat officials denied allocating any sanitation work to the duo on May Day.
