By Manjeet Sehgal: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow’ alert across five North Indian states, namely Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The weather change comes in the wake of two Western disturbances; a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and its neighbourhood, South Pakistan, and an induced cyclonic circulation over North West Rajasthan that triggered a drop in mercury significantly.
Strong Western disturbances active over North India have resulted in rainfall and hail storms in the plains and the hill state of Himachal Pradesh.

Weather conditions also affected Chandigarh, which reported a drop of nearly 10 degrees Celsius in May, the lowest in the past 36 years. The average temperature in Chandigarh usually hovers around 40 degree Celsius during May. On April 17, the Mercury touched 40 degrees Celsius but it dropped to 30.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
Fresh rainfall on Monday further dropped the temperature by 25.7 degree Celsius.
Neighbouring states, including Punjab and Haryana, have been experiencing a nip in the air and pleasant weather with a drop in the temperature, even during the day.
Respite from heat not limited to Chandigarh
One of the hottest places in Haryana, Hisar, has also reported a drop in temperatures. While the normal temperature during May 2022 was 47.5 degree Celsius, this year, it has not climbed 30 degrees Celsius.
The IMD official said that temperatures will start rising after May 14 and are likely to result in heatwave conditions in many places.
The power consumption in these states has also been reduced and there were no reports of unannounced power cuts.
