‘Criminals roaming scot-free while…’: BJP slams Nitish govt for ex-Bihar MLA’s arrest over Ram Navami violence

[ad_1]

By Aditya Vaibhav: Political slugfest continued in Bihar between the Nitish Kumar-led Mahagathbandhan government and the BJP over the arrest of former local BJP MLA Jawahar Prasad by Rohtas district administration for his suspected involvement in the violence that triggered after a Ram Navami procession in Sasaram.

The BJP has categorically blamed the Mahagathbandhan for “intentionally implicating” Prasad, a five-time local MLA. Bihar BJP chief Samrat Chaudhary on Wednesday slammed the state government, CM Nitish Kumar in particular, for arresting the former BJP MLA from Sasaram.

“Criminals are roaming scot-free while those with sober backgrounds are lodged in jails,” Samrat said.

Samrat was in Sasaram for a day-long dharna organised by the BJP outside Rohtas Collectorate. His protest started from the main gate of Sasaram jail. He tried to barge inside the jail to meet the arrested former MLA but to no avail.

Apparently miffed by Sasaram jail administration’s decision to not allow him to meet inmate Jawahar, Samrat raised slogans against the government and embarked on his cycle march, along with BJP workers, from the jail to the Collectorate.

THE INCIDENT

Clashes broke out between two groups in Sasaram on March 31 after the Ram Navami procession. Stone-pelting was also reported in the area. To maintain the law and order situation, the authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in Sasaram.

The incident was reported close on the heels of a scheduled tour of Home Minister Amit Shah to Sasaram. The Home Minister had to cancel his visit to the city due to the violence.

Nitish Kumar chaired a meeting over the incident. During the meeting, he directed the police to be on alert, identify the anti-social elements and act against them to maintain law and order.

Officials were also asked to monitor those spreading rumours and take appropriate measures to curb misinformation or disinformation.
