Students unable to go to college, pushed to work in Bidi industry: TN villagers over suspended bus service

By Pramod Madhav: Residents of Vadiyur village in Tamil Nadu requested Tenkasi District Collector Durai Ravichandran to restore bus service between Tenkasi and Vadiyur, stating that the students were unable to go to the college after the bus services were terminated.

During the Gram Sabha meet, a resident of Vadiyur requested the plying of bus route number 13, which connects the village with the town.

The resident stated that due to suspension of the bus service, 12 students lost their chance to go to college and were even pushed to go to work in the Bidi industry.

COLLECTOR RESPONDS

District collector Ravichandran blamed the state’s ambitious ‘Free bus service for women’ as the reason for bus route suspension.

“I was informed about bus no. 13 as well. I will definitely take the necessary action to see if we can restart the bus on the route. As you might all know, there is not much revenue as buses, leading to several cut-short routes being stopped due to the free bus travel scheme for women. So, if there is a possibility, will speak with the depot to resume service,” said Ravichandran.

Meanwhile, requests were also placed to close a government-run liquor shop in their village as it was open several hours before work time, leading to unnecessary fights. Anthony, who raised the allegations, also stated that when he filed a complaint with the Collectorate over liquor being sold way earlier, he was told that the shop can’t be closed as no school, temple, mosque or church was next to it.
