By Manjeet Sehgal: Jasvir Singh Jassi, who was arrested by the Punjab Police in a sacrilege incident in Rupnagar district’s Morinda area, died on Monday. The man died at the Mansa civil hospital after he was taken for treatment following complaints of chest pain and breathlessness. Now, hospital sources have told India Today that there were deep wounds on the body of Jasvir Singh Jassi.

Jasvir Singh was accused of desecrating the Guru Granth Sahib and hitting two Sikh priests at the historic Kotwali Sahib gurdwara in Morinda town in Rupnagar district on April 24. Soon after the incident, he was overpowered by devotees present in the gurdwara and beaten up before being handed over to the police.

After his police remand ended, Jasvir Singh was sent to judicial custody and lodged in the Mansa jail on April 29. On May 1, Jasvir Singh was shifted to a government hospital in Mansa after he complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing, according to police sources. He died within hours.

His postmortem was conducted in Patiala on Tuesday, but his body has not been cremated yet. The body is still lying in the hospital mortuary as the family members have yet to claim it.

Jasvie Singh’s family, including his parents, wife, and a four-year-old son, were forced to leave Morinda town after a crowd attacked their home. Their whereabouts are not known.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib jathedar Gyani Raghbir Singh in a video message has asked the people not to let his last rites be performed as per Sikh rituals.

Sources said the police will wait for the family to claim the body and if they don’t, he will be cremated elsewhere.

While the authorities were awaiting an autopsy report, hospital sources said there were deep wounds on the body of Jasvir Singh Jassi who was running an electrical goods store in Morinda and was the sole breadwinner in the family.

Jasvir Singh had earlier escaped an attempt on his life in Rupnagar Court on April 25. A lawyer, identified as Sahib Singh, tried to kill him in the court complex, but the pistol did not work.
