EXCLUSIVE: Dibyendu Bhattacharya on OTT censorship, “Art is a reflection of life, will they censor life?” : Bollywood News

Over the past few years, there has been a debate on whether there should be any censorship on OTT considering the bold content shown in some online shows. Actor Dibyendu Bhattacharya, who has gained fame in recent years through a number of OTT shows, clearly believes that online content shouldn’t be censored.

EXCLUSIVE: Dibyendu Bhattacharya on OTT censorship, “Art is a reflection of life, will they censor life?”

In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, he said, “I have never understood much about censorship since the beginning. At the end of the day, there are 4-5 people who decide what the audience should watch. Don’t you think this is against the idea of democracy? I have always never believed in this.”

Dibyendu believes in rating content as per age groups. “They should certify a certain project as adult content or parental guidance or U (universal). Or they should adopt age-restricted ratings, like they do on Netflix. How much will they censor? Art is, after all, a reflection of life. Will they censor life?”

The actor believes that since art is a reflection of real-life, there is bound to be reality in content. “They haven’t banned tobacco, alcohol and gambling in real life. Also, there are so many cases pending in the courts in real life; there are files and files lying there. So, if the life is such, won’t the reflection be the same?” he asked.

Dibyendu also agrees that there are shows where there is too much of bloodshed and that there should be self-censorship by the makers. “Yes, at times there is too much of gore and violence,” he said. “So, there should be self-censorship by the producer and director. For me also these things are debatable. I also don’t fully know what should happen. But with the kind of censorship we have been practicing, things will become mundane and boring.”

Dibyendu has become known in the last few years after starring in a number of web shows like Criminal Justice, Undekhi, Jamtara, Sacred Games, The Gone Game, Mirzapur, etc. He was last seen in the second season of Rocket Boys.

“It (OTT) has been a very big boon for me undoubtedly,” he said. “The flow of work has increased. The industry has become more content driven. When the industry had begun, there was not as much pressure on the producers and directors that they need to cast a star because it wasn’t a box office-oriented industry. But now stars are entering the medium slowly.”

When asked whether he is fine with more and more big stars entering the OTT space, Dibyendu said, “I don’t feel good or bad about it. I feel it’s an industry and there is no boundary in arts. It’s a field of art where anybody can work. This isn’t a case of I can work here and you can’t,” he said.
