EXCLUSIVE: Dibyendu Bhattacharya’s two movies in 2001 were jointly BANNED but they also jointly received Best Film award : Bollywood News

Dibyendu Bhattacharya has become a popular name in the web series space in the last few years. The actor has showed his versatility by playing different characters in shows like Criminal Justice, Undekhi, Jamtara, Sacred Games, The Gone Game, Mirzapur, Rocket Boys, etc. But he has been working since over 20 years. During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Dibyendu recalled two films of his made over two decades ago that jointly received Best Film award but were also jointly banned for their bold content.

Sharing about the films, the actor said, “I was a young blood then. There were films where I played the main lead, including a film Divya Drishti by Siddharth Srinivasan and Urf Professor by Pankaj Advani. Both the films jointly got the Best Film award at the International Digital Film Festival 2001 in Delhi. But both the films were also banned. I played the main lead in Divya Drishti and I was one of the important characters in Urf Professor.”

Sharing the reason why the films were banned back then, Dibyendu shared, “I was a gay cop in Divya Drishti, who was the main lead. There were some bold sequences. In Urf Professor also I had some controversial scenes. Both the films were jointly banned but they also jointly won the Best Film award.”

Urf Professor also starred Manoj Pahwa, Antara Mali, Yashpal Sharma and Sharman Joshi in pivotal roles.

Dibyendu is in awe of Digital Talkies for assessing the future for cinema and going digital more than two decades ago. “Shekhar Kapur was one of the pioneers of the company,” he said recalling. “Maybe they realized that in the future, films will go digital. Their move was ahead of the time. They had pushed 10 digital films then.”

Dibyendu Bhattacharya was last seen in the second season of the Sony LIV web series Rocket Boys, where he reprised his character, Raza Mehdi.
