Gulshan Devaiah clarifies his views on Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s comments on depression as an urban concept; says, “I am not taking a dig at Nawaz’s views” : Bollywood News

Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently stated in an interview that individuals residing in rural areas do not experience depression, suggesting that urban dwellers tend to glorify their emotions. His comments on the topic of depression received significant backlash on social media. Actor Gulshan Devaiah had also expressed his thoughts on Nawazuddin’s perspective on mental health through a tweet. While Gulshan Devaiah refrained from assuming the role of a critic or directly addressing Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s comments on depression as an urban concept, he expressed his astonishment towards them. As an actor himself, Gulshan Devaiah believed that such statements tend to oversimplify and generalize the complex topic of mental health, which he felt was inappropriate.

Talking to Hindustan Times about the same, Gulshan said, “My intention was not to critique Nawaz bhai’s views, also because it is a very popular view. A lot of people have this thought to some extent. They believe people living in an urban setup and the pressures they encounter are very different from the pressures that somebody living in a rural setup might experience,” Devaiah further added, “So, it is possible that people are more susceptible to mental health in urban areas because biologically we’re not evolved to keep up with technology, and our lives revolve around that.”

Taking about mental health, Gulshan added, “But at the same time, we can’t discount the fact and generalise mental health. It is a problem. I’m no expert on the issue, neither can I diagnose. What I can certainly do is talk and have a conversation about it and urge more people to come forward and talk about it.”

“The conversation should be something else only. I am not taking a dig at Nawaz’s views, but just saying that we should not have our blinders on while talking about an issue. Instead, we need to talk about it to simplify the concept so that people can understand it,” he concluded.

Earlier while talking to Mashable India, Siddiqui stated that depression is an alien thing for people from villages. He asserted, “I come from a place where, if I would tell my father that I am feeling depressed, he would give me one tight slap… Depression waha nahi tha, kisi ko bhi nahi hota waha depression, sab khush hai. But I learnt about anxiety, depression, bipolar after coming to the city.” He had further stated, “Ye shehron mein aake hoti hai, yaha pe har aadmi apne chhote emotions ko bhi bohot glorify karta hai.”

Reacting to this Gulshan had tweeted, “Dhritarashtra and Gandhari syndrome. I immensely respect the man for his craft, but I’d not take him seriously on this issue. If you even just look at alcoholism or addictions, they exist in rural communities and that’s mental illness. No addict indulges in addiction because they love it. The addiction is a symptom, the real problem is the trauma they can’t heal.”
