The press conference of The Kerala Story, held on Wednesday, May 15, was a memorable affair. The event began with the speech of Shruti from Aarsha Vidya Samajam, Kerala who claimed that they have de-radicalized as many as 7000 women at their organization. Before release, the makers had claimed that 32,000 women had gone missing from Kerala and were brainwashed. This claim was dropped from the trailer due to massive criticism. At the press conference, Vipul Shah made it clear that he stood vindicated as their claim was not false. He also blasted a section of the media for ridiculing them.
The Kerala Story press conference: Vipul Shah BLASTS a section of media: “Lives of so many girls are getting destroyed. Unka saath na dekar iss film ko jhoota saabit karne ki GANDI koshish ki gayi”
Vipul Shah said, “Shruti herself talked that 7000 brainwashed were rehabilitated that too by just one organization. So, the whole controversy around 32,000 girls (should be put to rest). We have met hundreds of girls affected by it. Our film is about three girls and through their hardships, we have tried to bring forth the tales of the sufferings of thousands of women. Bahut dukh hua ki media ke kuch logon ne unka (radicals) saath bhi diya. Humein discredit karne ki koshish ki. We are nobody. But the lives of so many girls are getting destroyed. Unka saath na dekar iss film ko chota ya jhoota saabit karne ki gandi koshish ki gayi. Yeh kitna sahi hai yeh har ek ko aaine mein dekhke jawab dena chahiye.”
Vipul Shah continued, “We’ll soon come up with more shocking truths and expose the wrongdoers. Then I’d like to see those who criticized us, will they change their stand? I don’t care what they think about us. But don’t weaken the fight of these girls. Don’t do injustice to them. That is our request.”
Vipul Shah, at a later point, said, “We knew the challenges of making this film and that it’ll be difficult. We knew that we’ll be labelled a propaganda film and that we have an agenda. But that didn’t deter us from doing something which is so humane and right. That’s why, when certain questions are asked, we get a little emotional (and angry). We should be talking about these girls. That should be our concern. We got emotional as we wonder why people are not able to look at their pain. Why the country needs to be woken up and after this also, we still need to be woken up.”
He added, “Nevertheless, today we are happy that the nation is at least talking about this subject. Forget about the film. It’ll come and go but this topic should not go.”
Also present at the press conference were director Sudipto Sen and actors Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani and Siddhi Idnani. Moreover, 26 women from Aarsha Vidya Samajam, Kerala also graced the press conference. The makers claimed that they were brainwashed similarly to the characters in The Kerala Story.
