Apart from being one of the biggest stars across the globe, Shah Rukh Khan is also known for his deep and witty answers in his interviews. That’s the reason why a lot of interviews keep getting read and seen for years. But all of his viral interviews have been taken when he was a star or, at least, one film old.
Throwback: When Shah Rukh Khan claimed he isn’t an ‘audio cassette actor’; said, “I’d feel ridiculous taking myself seriously as an ‘actor’ just because of the songs”
But we have got our hands on one of SRK’s first interviews, if not the first, which was taken when he was a television actor and his first film Deewana hadn’t released. He was just 24 then. The interview had appeared in the newspaper Deccan Herald and was taken by journalist Masood Ansari. The scanned copy of the interview was provided to us by archivist Shiva Prasad Shetty from Bengaluru. He regularly shares old interview and article scans on his well-known Facebook group called Box Office Experts.
In the said interview, Khan was asked whether he is confident that he will succeed in the film industry. He said, “Why not? But I want to do things in my own way. If a director asks me to do something ridiculous, I am not going to oblige him blindly, he will have to convince me for that. I am not afraid of competition, that’s in every other field too, but I know that I am talented and spontaneous, so I feel I have a good chance here.”
Speaking more about himself, SRK also took a dig at some actors who, according to him, used to ride high on the success of the music of their films. “I am talented and I’ll prove it,” he said. “I am not saying that I am exceptional, but I am better than a lot of non-actors who are making it big because of the music of their films. I mean, I’d feel ridiculous taking myself seriously as an ‘actor’ just because the songs of my film are a big hit. I am not an audio cassette actor.”
Shah Rukh also shared that he was already choosy when it comes to doing films. “Yes, I am quite careful in accepting my assignments,” he said. “I want to see the script before signing on the dotted lines. And I am lucky to have some sensible directors for my initial films.”
The old interview also mentions that at that time, SRK had signed a few films like Hema Malini’s Dil Aashna Hai, Rakesh Roshan’s King Uncle, Aziz Mirza’s Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and FC Mehra’s Ghost Mera Dost (which was later renamed as Chamatkar). Interestingly, none of these films became Khan’s debut vehicle. His first released film was Raj Kanwar’s Deewana, which also starred Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti. It was shot after the aforementioned films.
SRK also said in the same interview that he is doing a film with Kundan Shah called Hum To Mohabbat Karega, where he is playing a negative role. The film was never made with SRK. Years later, Shah made a film with the same title with Bobby Deol and Karisma Kapoor.
