By Pramod Madhav: As many as 13 people have died and several hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor in two separarate incidents in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Nine died in Marakkanam of Villupuram district while four were killed at Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district after consuming illicit liquor. Four police officials have been suspended for dereliction of duty. The police have registered 57 cases and arrested nine people, who allegedly produced and supplied spurious liquor and gutka.
The police are still to find any evidence of a link between the two incidents.
“Currently, more than two dozen people are undergoing treatment and are said to be doing well,” the officials said as quoted by news agency ANI. Inspector General of Police (North) N Kannan said the victims might have consumed spurious liquor mixed with etanol-methanol substance.
“Earlier, in the Chengalpattu district, five were hospitalised. four of them died during treatment. An autopsy has been carried out. Accused Ammavasai has been arrested in connection with the Chengalpattu incident. In both incidents, a few accused are absconding and special teams have been formed to nab the accused. In both cases, liquor used for industrial purpose has been used. Three inspectors and four sub-inspectors have been suspended from both districts for dereliction of duty,” Kannan further said.
In the Chengalpattu district, 5 were hospitalised. 4 of them died during treatment. An autopsy has been done. Accused Ammavasai has been arrested in connection with the Chengalpattu district incident. In both incidents, a few accused are absconding and special teams are formed toâæ

TN CM ORDERS SOLATIUM OF RS 10 LAKH TO FAMILIES OF DECEASED
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, in a statement, said he was saddened by the deaths in the state due to consumption of liquor. He ordered a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the people hospitalised in the incident. The CM further said that four police officials — Marakkanam inspector Arul Vadivazhagan, Sub-Inspector Deeban, Kottakuppam Prohibition Enforcement Wing police station inspector Mariya Sofi Manjula and Sub-Inspector Sivagurunathan — have been suspended.
