By Pramod Madhav: Three have died while 10 others are undergoing medical treatment after consuming spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Marakkanam. It is said that 16 people were admitted to JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry after drinking hooch.

The deceased have been identified as Suresh, Shankar and Ranivel. The condition of the hospitalised individuals is said to be critical.

Opposition leader and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami slammed the “administrative incompetence” of the MK Stalin-led government and demanded immediate action.

He claimed that measures had been taken to abolish the sale of spurious liquor, under the AIADMK regime, but the issue is prevalent in the state again.

Recently, Palaniswami hit out at the DMK-led government for “continuing to engage in such anti-people activities that disturb public peace and increase crime”. His statements came after the Tamil Nadu government amended the Tamil Nadu Liquor (Licence and Permit) Rules, 1981, to facilitate the possession and serving of liquor on commercial premises and non-commercial premises.

The move sparked a controversy with opposition parties slamming the move as “anti-people” and said it would fuel crime.
