By Aditya Vaibhav: Former Bihar MP Anand Mohan, convicted for killing an IAS officer, walked out of jail on Thursday. Mohan’s name was on a list of more than 20 prisoners who were ordered to be set free by a notification issued by the state law department as they had spent more than 14 years behind bars.
However, India Today has learnt that two years ago, a case was registered against Anand Mohan after several mobile phones were recovered from his possession.
As per case number 813, filed in Sadar Police Station of Saharsa district in 2021, Anand Mohan was accused of keeping prohibited items inside Saharsa jail. The case was registered on the basis of the self-statement issued by then jailor Suresh Chaudhary after a raid in JP Block of the jail in which strongman Anand Mohan was lodged.

The jailor in his statement mentioned that several smartphones and mobile phones were recovered from Anand Mohan’s possession besides other phone accessories. The raid inside Saharsa Jail was conducted by a team of senior district-level officials besides 60 policemen.
ANAND MOHAN WALKS OUT OF JAIL
Anand Mohan, who was convicted for murdering a district magistrate, was formally released from Saharsa jail in the wee hours of Thursday. He, however, was not seen after his formal release.
Anand Mohan’s release has triggered enormous criticism from all quarters, with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar finding himself at the end of political jibes. As many as three PILs have been slapped against Anand Mohan’s release. Apart from this, the IAS officers’ association has ‘strongly requested’ the state government to ‘rethink’ this move.
Anand Mohan was convicted for his role in the 1994 murder of the then Gopalganj collector G Krishnaiah during the funeral procession of Muzaffarpur gangster Chotan Shukla. A local court had sentenced him to death in October 2007, but the Patna High Court later commuted it to life imprisonment in December, 2008, after an appeal.
On April 10, the Nitish Kumar government amended the Bihar Prison Manual, 2012, removing a clause that said those convicted for murder of a public servant on duty could not be given remission of their jail term.
