Army aircrafts, helicopters to be deployed over violence-hit Manipur for surveillance

By Saraswat Kashyap: In view of the Manipur clashes, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles (AR) have been working to increase air surveillance around the affected area. In a bid to avoid any untoward incident, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles will reportedly deploy aircrafts and helicopters over Manipur and along the Indo-Myanmar border.

In particular, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), and helicopters, will be used. An aerial view of the situation should give security forces an edge for effective surveillance over the violence-struck state.

On May 3, violence broke out in Manipur after tribals organised a demonstration in the ten hill districts of the state to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status as per a PTI report.

Around 23,000 people were displaced due to the clashes as they took shelter in military garrisons. The clashes reportedly resulted in the death of 54 people.

Meanwhile, Union Minister for the Development of North Eastern Region G Kishan Reddy on Sunday said that the Centre is ready to listen to the issues of the two warring groups and help in resolving them.

“Please come forward to solve the issues in a peaceful manner. The government is ready. You have seen the farmers’ issue. When it was peaceful, we tried to convince them. As the issue was not resolved, we agreed to their demand, and those bills (three farm laws) were withdrawn. So, the government is not adamant,” he said.
