By India Today News Desk: Amid tightened security in Prayagraj on Saturday, the last rites of Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad were conducted at Kasari Masari graveyard. A force of more than 200 police and RAF (Rapid Action Force) personnel was present at the Kasari Masari cemetery and security was increased near Atiq’s house in the Chakia area of Prayagraj.
19-year-old Asad and one of Atiq Ahmed’s noted henchmen, Ghulam, both accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, were gunned down in an encounter by Uttar Pradesh Police Special Task Force on April 13. While Atiq was buried near his father’s property in Prayagraj, the police said that Ghulam’s funeral would be performed elsewhere. It may be noted that Ghulam’s relatives refused to accept his mortal remains on Friday.
Here are the top developments of the last rites of Asad and Ghulam:
- Who was allowed to attend Asad’s last rites on Saturday?
Amid heavy police security, a few distant relatives of Asad and locals were allowed inside the burial ground. The burial lasted for an hour, the police said. The police mentioned nearly 20-25 relatives of Asad were present at the funeral.
“The last rites of Asad Ahmad have been completed, and it went for an hour. A few distant relatives of Atiq and some people of the locality were allowed to go to the graveyard. This was necessary from the security point of view,” Joint Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, Akash Kulhari told PTI.
Earlier, Asad’s uncle, Usman, reached the graveyard with the body of his nephew. Meanwhile, the media was strictly restricted from entering the heavily guarded graveyard.
- Atiq Ahmed denied permission to attend his son’s funeral
Atiq had on Friday sought permission from a magistrate to attend the funeral of his son. His lawyer Manish Khanna had told PTI that since Friday was a holiday on account of Ambedkar Jayanti, the request had been sent to the remand magistrate.
However, the burial took place before Atiq’s application could be presented in the court of a chief judicial magistrate on Saturday.
