By Saraswat Kashyap: Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding ‘The Kerala Story’, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday watched the film with his Cabinet ministers and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs. He lauded the film for what it portrays and urged people to watch it, “particularly along with their daughters”.

The film narrates a story of religious conversion in Kerala and some young girls being recruited by terror group ISIS.

“The Kerala Story exposes terrorism and throws light on what is going on inside terrorist camps in the name of jihad and religion,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said after watching the film.

Describing the film, Sarma said it showed the story of an innocent woman being used by terrorist groups as a pawn.

“There are some sections of people globally, who are trying to create a narrative in the minds of innocent Kerala people, as per what I have come across on social media and real-time interviews. I want to say that despite this being a tough time for Keralites, they must raise their voice against the use of innocent girls by the terrorist organizations,” he said.

Sarma also drew a comparison to his own state and said cases of girls being made to join terrorism are non-existent in Assam. However, he said, “There are cases where girls have been indoctrinated and were motivated to convert to another religion merely because they fell in love.”

Sarma further added, ”Protect Dharma and protect civilization, so you can lead a healthy life. Also, I would like to appeal to the people of India to see The Kerala Story along with their families, particularly along with their your girl child.”

Sarma also said, “Banning the film is not the solution. It talks about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and is not against Muslims.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently banned the Sudipto Sen-directed film from being screened in her state.

The film landed in controversy ever since its trailer released, with critics claiming it villifies Muslims as a community. On the other hand, the film has been receiving praise from several BJP leaders and Hindu groups.
