Assam Congress expels Angkita Dutta who accused party leader of harassment

[ad_1]

By Rahul Gautam: Former Assam Youth Congress chief Angkita Dutta, who accused Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV of sexism and harassment, has been expelled from the party for six years. Congress in a statement said Angkita Dutta has been expelled from the primary membership of the party for six years for ‘anti-party’ activities.

Angkita Dutta said that she was removed as the Assam Youth Congress chief without any prior warning and questioned whether the removal was on account of her gender. She accused BV Srinivas of being “sexist and chauvinistic” and using derogatory comments.

Angkita Dutta is the daughter of Anjan Dutta, who was a minister in Tarun Gogoi’s government in Assam and also headed the party’s state unit.

In multiple tweets, Dutta lashed out at Priyanka Gandhi and her brother, Rahul Gandhi, for failing to take any actions against Srinivas despite her complaints.

In a complaint filed against the Youth Congress president, Angkita Dutta alleged BV Srinivas had not only been harassing and torturing her for the last six months but also threatened her of dire consequences if she approached the higher office-bearers of the Congress to complain about him.

Soon after Angkita came out with a series of tweets explaining the harassment she had been facing from BV Srinivas, the legal cell of the Indian Youth Congress said it would initiate strict action against Dutta for levelling ‘frivolous allegations’ against the IYC president.

A day later, Angkita alleged that she was removed from the post of the Assam Youth Congress President and blamed an in-charge, Vardhan Yadav, for acting at the behest of BV Srinivas. Srinivas too sent a legal notice to Angkita saying she was defaming him.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has asked the Assam Police to conduct an inquiry into the harassment allegations levelled by Angkita and asked the Director General of Police, Assam, to submit a detailed report of the case. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said police will be involved if the Congress cannot handle the matter internally.
