By Anupam Mishra: An Assam rifle personnel was wounded after being shot by some miscreants in Manipur on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Manipur East’s Dolaithabi when a team of the Assam rifle was patrolling the area.

After the incident, the personnel was rushed to a hospital while the miscreants flew from the spot. The personnel is currently undergoing treatment.

This is the first incident where an Army personnel was targeted in Manipur ever since the clashes broke out. Meanwhile, 128 Army and Assam Rifles columns are deployed in Manipur to restore and maintain law and order situation.

Last week, incidents of violence were reported during ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called by All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in Torbung area of Churachandpur district to oppose the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

ATSUM said the rally was organized to express dissent to the “persistent demands of the Meitei community for its inclusion in the ST category” gaining momentum.

Several incidents of violence were reported in Manipur during the rally. As per reports, many protesters were seen burning tires and other objects on the isolated roads of Torbung Village in Tuibong Tehsil area in Churachandpur district.

Following the massive violence, the government issued a shoot at sight order in “extreme cases whereby forms of persuasion, warning, reasonable force have been exhausted and the situation can not be controlled.”
