By Prateek Chakraborty: Junmoni Rabha, the woman sub-inspector of Assam Police killed in a road accident in Nagaon district, made headlines when she arrested her fiancé on charges of fraud. She was known as ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabangg cop’, named after the two popular Bollywood films, for taking tough action against criminals.

The car in which Junmoni Rabha was travelling in collided head-on with a container truck, whose owner fled the spot after the accident. She was not in uniform and was travelling alone at the time of the incident. She was the in-charge of the Morikolong police outpost.

“We will always remember Junmoni Rabha as a young energetic officer who was dedicated to the service as a sub-inspector of Assam Police,” said Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Doley.

Her family has suspected foul play and asked for a thorough probe into the accident. The state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said it will investigate the cause of the accident.

CONTROVERSY-RIDDEN LIFE

The 30-year-old cop was a resident of Dakhingaon in Kamrup district and joined Assam Police on July 1, 2017. She was inducted into the Nagaon police department on December 13, 2021. Despite having a daring image that sent chills down the spines of criminals, a number of controversies engulfed the young officer’s life.

In May last year, Junmoni Rabha arrested her fiancé on charges of fraud. She was arrested on June 5, 2022, after being questioned for two consecutive days. A court in Majuli district remanded her to 14 days’ judicial custody, and she was suspended from the service. However, her suspension was lifted later and she rejoined service.

Two contractors had complained with the police that they had entered into financial deals with her former boyfriend, Rana Pogag, after Junmoni Rabha introduced him to them when she was posted in Majuli. They alleged that they were duped.

Junmoni Rabha had filed an FIR against Rana Pogag alleging that he duped some people by promising them jobs and contracts in the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

Rana Pogag falsely claimed himself to be a Public Relations Officer of the ONGC and duped people with lakhs of rupees by promising them jobs at the respected organisation.

“When the accused first met Junmoni, he identified himself as an ONGC officer. They were supposed to get married in November but Junmoni learned he duped some people by promising to give them jobs and contracts in the ONGC,” a police officer told journalists.

According to reports, Junmoni Rabha was in a relationship with the accused for over a year and got engaged to him in October 2021.

In January 2022, an audio tape of her purported telephonic conversation with BJP MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan from Bihpuria constituency surfaced that caused furore.

In the audio, the duo was engaged in an altercation after Rabha had arrested some boatmen for operating country boats with machines fitted illegally and over alleged harassment of the people of Bhuyan’s constituency by her.

Following the audio tape leak, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had then said that an elected representative should be given due respect.

FIR AGAINST HER BEFORE ACCIDENT

Before Junmoni Rabha was killed in the accident, an FIR against Junmoni was registered on Monday at North Lakhimpur Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) such as criminal conspiracy, dacoity, robbery, attempt to cause death, wrongful confinement and extortion, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh said.

The case was filed based on a complaint by a woman.

The DGP claimed the police from Lakhimpur and Nagaon districts “took lawful action pursuant to registration of crime”.

“In the wake of request of a fair probe from various sections of society into FIR Number 0183/2023 (the North Lakhimpur case) and death of SI Junmoni Rabha, it has been decided to transfer investigation to CID Assam,” he said in a tweet.

FAMILY DEMANDS IMPARTIAL PROBE

Junmoni Rabha’s family members demanded Himanta Biswa Sarma to conduct an impartial probe to find out the truth about her demise.

Sumitra Rabha, the deceased woman cop’s mother alleged that it was a case of pre-planned murder “by some unidentified racket” and demanded justice by punishing the perpetrators of the “planfully created” accident.

Subarna Bodo, Junmoni Rabha’s aunt, said, “On Monday night, a team of higher police officials conducted a raid at Junmoni’s official quarter in Nagaon and seized around Rs 1 lakh. Her mother was also present during the raid.”

Junmoni’s mother earned the money from her poultry and pig farming business at home, she claimed.
