By Rittick Mondal: At least one person was killed and nearly 50 were injured in a lightning strike in Bengal’s Bankura district during a public meeting held by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday evening.
The incident took place in the Indas area where TMC’s youth leader Debanghsu Bhattacharya was about to address a public meeting.
One person, identified as Samed Mallik, 36, lost his life and several others were injured. As many as seven critical patients were shifted to Burdwan Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

According to sources, it was raining before the programme began, so those assembled for the meeting rushed from the spot to seek shelter in a nearby place. Many people took shelter under a tree. It suddenly began to thunder, and lightning struck the region.
TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, who is currently in Begal’s Uttar Dinajpur, expressed his grief over the tragic incident. He has directed Debangshu Bhattacharya and other local leaders to meet the families of those affected.
In a statement, Trinamool Congress said that the party stands in the hour of grief with them and will provide all necessary medical assistance to those injured and will provide support to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
