BJP activist Abhijit Sarkar was reportedly killed by a mob hours after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were announced on May 2, 2021.

During the post-poll violence, many BJP leaders had alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers were behind the death of 35-year-old Abhijit Sarkar.

The CBI had named 20 accused in its chargesheet for the case, namely – Sanjay Samanta, Samir Samanta, Sankar Das alias Buno, Arun Dey, Rahul Dey, Sourav Dey, Sukhdeb Poddar, Amit Das, Arup Das, Biswajit Das, Sanjay Barik, Amit Das, Tumpa Das alias Kali, Gopal Das, Papiya Barik, Sanjay Basak, Sufal Bose, Sanjay Dey alias Suvo, Abhijit Dey and Kajal Das.

Two accused – a couple identified as Sanjay and Papiya Barik – were absconding since the incident in 2021. The CBI had issued a sketch of the two accused to arrest them. It had also announced a price of Rs 50,000 on the accused.

The two accused were nabbed by the CBI after the central probe agency received information about their whereabouts. Biswajit Sarkar, brother of deceased BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar, had received information that two accused had been working in a factory in Kolkata’s Keshtopur for a while.

After Biswajit informed the CBI about the same, the factory in Keshtopur was raided and the duo was arrested on Wednesday.
