By Ashutosh Mishra: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, the top Muslim religious and intellectual body, has condemned the killing of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, calling it a cold-blooded murder and a shameful act under police protection.

President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani termed the killing “brutal” and said what happened is “shameful” for the country and humanity. “If there is no rule of law in this country, anarchy will prevail everywhere,” he pointed out.

Maulana Madani said if there is criminal activity, the court should decide the nature of the crime and punishment.

He said taking the law into hands, whether it is done by the police or by the people, is an insult to democracy.

Maulana Madani demanded that the entire incident should be investigated under the supervision of the Supreme Court, and those found guilty prosecuted.

He also appealed to the prime minister and home minister to take all necessary measures to address the anxiety and mistrust created among the people after the incident.

Maulana Madani also appealed to the people to maintain law and order and not become a part of anarchy under any circumstances.

On April 15, gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were killed in Prayagraj. He was shot at point-blank range. The firing took place outside the MLN Medical College premises, where they were being taken for medical examination.

Atiq Ahmed was hit by eight bullets. A bullet was found in his head, neck, chest and waist, as per the autopsy report.

Ashraf was shot in the neck, back, wrist, stomach and waist, while three bullets were recovered from his body, and two bullets ripped through him, the autopsy report read.
